Achievement test scores for Gilbert Public Schools have been number one in the East Valley for several years, and exceed both national and state averages.

To register a student in the Gilbert Public Schools , parents must bring to their neighborhood school:

  • Birth Certificate - This must be a state or county issued original or certified copy. A hospital or religious certificate will not be accepted.
  • Proof of Residency - We must have a copy of proof on file in the form of a current utility bill, house closing papers or rental contract.
  • Current Immunizations - Please contact the school health office for information regarding immunizations

This documentation is mandatory before your child may start school. If you are not sure what school your child should attend, you may contact any school for boundary information or our Planning and Development Department.

Mesa Public Schools News

 

To register a student in a Mesa school for the first time, you'll need a certified copy of the student's birth certificate, current immunization record and proof of residency.

By school board policy, most children enrolling in kindergarten will reach the age of 5 by August 31. However, parents of children reaching the age of 5 between September 1 and December 31 may request enrollment in kindergarten if they believe it is in their child's best interest. Children will be enrolled where space is available.

Proof of residence must also be shown. Parents may provide one of the following:

    * Rent receipt
    * Utility invoice
    * Motor vehicle registration
    * Housing contract, lease agreement
    * State income tax return
    * Bank account, pay check, etc.
    * Employer letter on letterhead

Teen driving public service announcements sought

AAA has extended the deadline to submit entries for the AAA Teen Driving public service announcement (PSA) contest to Sept. 30. To submit a PSA entry visit www.aaateendriving.com.      
Teens interested in entering the contest should create a 60-second PSA designed to build awareness on the biggest issues facing teen drivers. Winners of the PSA contest will receive a grand prize of $2,000, second place will receive $700 and third place will receive $300 from AAA Insurance.

Help coming for autistic children
A lack of special-education teachers with expertise with autism is causing problems in schools across the country.
Arizona Republic reporter Lesley Wright writes in an article about how Arizona State University's West campus will offer the state's first  master's program to help teachers work with autistic children. Besides teachers, professors hope to help nurses, social workers, therapists, parents and anyone who is coping with autistic children.

$10,000 grants to make campuses green
College students can apply to receive a $10,000 grant to make our world a greener place.
 The 2nd annual Brita CollegeFilterforGood Eco-Challenge is asking college students to submit proposals outlining ways to make their campuses more sustainable. Students from universities across the country can submit a proposal for a chance to receive one of five $10,000 grants to develop programs to green their campus and community. Proposals will be accepted until Oct. 30 and will be evaluated on creativity, environmental benefit, educational impact and best use of time and budget.

Essay contest for notebook computers
Nova Mesa Computer Systems, Inc., a Phoenix, Ariz.-based manufacturer,  will give away three Netbook computer bundles as part of its first “Back to School” essay contest. The contest runs through Sept. 6 with winners announced by Sept. 21.

Public helps outfit 500 kids for back to school
Many businesses and community members are joining together to help kids as they go back to school this month.
Reporter Diana Balazs writes that thanks to a generous public, the Vista del Camino Center in Scottsdale has outfitted more than 500 disadvantaged Scottsdale children to go back to school.

Initially, donations came in slowly, prompting the center to consider turning away children. But residents and local businesses, civic groups and churches came through, said Kathy Breen, the center's manager. Read her story

Youth art contest to raise measles awareness








The American Red Cross is announcing a Youth Art Contest to raise awareness about measles across the world. Measles remains a leading cause of death among young children worldwide. Each day it kills an estimated 540 people, mostly children. But there is good news: it costs less than $1 to vaccinate a child against measles, and the measles initiative has helped reduce measles deaths by 74-percent worldwide by vaccinating millions of children.

Student interns get dose of lab work at T-Gen
Student interns got a real dose of what it takes to work in a research lab this summer at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, reporter Sherry Anne Rubiano writes in today's Arizona Republic.
Forty-five students were selected for the third annual Helios Scholars Program at TGen.
Under the guidance of a mentor, interns designed and developed their own research projects studying the genetic causes of diseases like cancer and diabetes.
The interns come from a range of backgrounds from high school students to parents who are looking to change careers.

Computer games teach kids about civics
Kids can learn about  civics with retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conno's new computter games, reporter Alex Dalenberg writes in today's Arizona Republic.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and her judicial ilk seem unlikely candidates for video-game heroes.
But beginning this month, kids can put themselves in the chambers of the U.S. Supreme Court in two online games endorsed by O'Connor and designed in part by Arizona educators.
The games will debut on the Our Courts Web site, ourcourts.org, a civics-education project chaired by O'Connor.

Donate back to school supplies
Friday is the last day for the back to school supply drive being sponsored by M & I Bank.
It is estimated that a teacher will spend between $400 and $700 of their own money every year on supplies for their classroom. They buy writing and creative tools, motivational materials, audio/visual aids and books, among other things. As schools cut budgets this year, the need for teachers to use personal resources will be even bigger.

Free Summer Workshops: AEPA Middle Grades Mathematics Exam Preparation
 The University of Arizona “Improving Academic Quality for Teachers” (IMPAQT) Project is offering free workshops this summer for teachers who need to pass the AEPA middle grades mathematics exam to become “highly qualified”. Workshop dates are now  scheduled for late July through August. They offer the four-hour workshops in Tucson and in Phoenix. The next AEPA exam date is August 22.

Dream Scholar Award applications due Sept. 15
The Arizona Dream Builder Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 that raises funds to support the future leaders of Arizona, is accepting applications for the 2009 Dream Scholar Award. 
 
Applicants must be high school seniors enrolled full-time in an Arizona school, maintain a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher, personally demonstrate commitment to school and community leadership through the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and provide two letters of support demonstrating their commitments to school and community.  To apply, students must submit a written application by Friday, Sept. 15.  Applications can be found at www.azdreambuilder.org.
